Le Coussin de Lyon
In 1643, a dreadful epidemic disease spread throughout the city of Lyon and to fight against it the aldermen of Lyon vowed to walk in procession to the Fourviere hill, which was already a place of prayer to the Virgin Mary, and offer a wax candle of seven pounds and a gold sovereign on a silk cushion. Since then the Magistrates of Lyon have respected this tradition.
The silk cushion inspired the creation of the 'Coussin de Lyon'. In 1960 silk manufacturers of Lyon worked with Voisin, Master chocolate makers, the former devising a box in the form of the historic silk cushion, the latter inventing a speciality made of rich cocoa, slightly flavored curaçao liqueur and blanched almonds, thus creating the Coussin de Lyon, now a famous speciality.
